Surgery was yesterday and apparently went exactly as planned. No need to slice me open, just four incisions and the robot did its thing. A few dissolving sutures covered in giant globs of cyanoacrylate (super glue). There is a bit of pain when I move but I think that’s to be expected.
My mom has been a great help. We drove around Forest Park the other day getting her used to driving a manual transmission again; she had to stop in the early ‘90s because of a skiing accident, but had a knee replacement back in 2017. We went out for a few nice meals when I could still eat and spent the day at the Missouri Botanical Garden (she’s a California Master Gardener).
I wish she could see the area in any other season, but winter is when I got sick, so winter it is. The weather has cooperated and it’s been in the 50s and 60s, not far from what they’re experiencing back home in Laguna (minus the rains they’re getting). It may snow here during her visit which will be a new experience.
They will probably remove the Foley today, which means I’ll have to get out of bed and walk. This sounds like a pretty good sign for just 24 hours after a major surgery. Very little was given in the way of opioid pain killers, with most of that being handled by IV forms of Tylenol (acetaminophen) (sp?) and ibuprofen.
Doctors coming in. More to follow...

you’re awake and clearly getting better, so that’s great news

Glad to hear the great news! I hope you have a quick and easy recovery.
At an old job, I actually got to play with one of those surgical robots. They are amazing. I could have done your surgery with one. Anyone who grew up with a Nintendo could.

Glad to hear it went well! Rest up and hope you’re out of there soon!
The fewer the opioids, the better!

The lighting was absolutely perfect. I was a little surprised at how well it came out.

Good to hear your surgery went well, and here’s to a speedy recovery.
Do you have to use the hateful incentive spirometer?
I had to use one of these after getting my gallbladder removed the other year. It is intended to make you cough to keep your lungs clear of fluid so you don’t get pneumonia. It made it feel like my insides were trying to come out the incisions.
Protip: You may want to avoid watching funny stuff for the next few days. I watched the Bolivia Special the day after my surgery and laughing hurt so bad.

Years ago, when I was in the hospital for diverticulitis I had to use one of those awful things. Given my current condition I don't think I'll have one of those. In the last few minutes I have coughed and laughed (watching Futurama and they made mention of Wingus and the Ping Pong Boys, which would be a great band name), and both hurt like hell. Perhaps I should stick to documentaries...

That's great news, I hope recovery continues to go great and your back to your usual self very soon.

Sounds very similar to my wife’s procedure. Did they use the belly button?
If you are looking for things to watch I would recommend 20 Feet from Stardom about backup singers.

I knew there had to be more than two incisions, and when I just checked I found a third one just millimeters from my navel. And a fourth. I’m just a human pincushion, stabbed all over the place...
Thanks for that recommendation. 20 Feet from Stardom is on my list of things to watch, and I’ll probably check that out if I can get the WiFi here in the hospital to work. If not I’ll check it out at home; they predict that I’ll be discharged tomorrow since recovery seems to be going quite well.

I’m glad to hear there were no complications or speed bumps with the surgery. Rest up, and best of luck to you for a speedy recovery.

Glad to hear that you are doing well.
That greenhouse looks amazing. Some day I think it would be cool to live in a greenhouse, or at least have one attached to a regular house. Some place warm and tropical to go read a book without having to travel.
